Ice Cream Dough: New Play Recipe!

I am so excited to reveal a new sensory dough I created purely experimentally while  trying
(and successfully) creating a new homemade paint recipe for sensitive skin!

I decided to call it

ICE CREAM DOUGH
because it looks JUST like ice cream and when I added scents to it, it smelled just like ice cream too!
You could seriously play an April Fools Day trick on someone with this stuff! Heck, even when you know it's not ice cream, it's pretty darn tempting NOT to eat. But just to clarify...it's not edible lol.

Ice Cream Dough Recipe *
3/4 cup hair conditioner
(I used just a very basic, super cheap generic dollar store brand conditioner)
1 1/2 cup cornstarch

Once I saw how much the basic recipe resembled ice cream, I knew I wanted it to take it a step further so I added color and scent and this is where I started getting really giddy, because it looked good enough to eat!

The basic recipe is fun on it's own and can be played with exactly as playdough.
It has a very light and airy, silky texture however,
**The secret to keeping it looking like ice cream is to not roll
it into a ball or smooth it over too much.**
However, keep in mind that it shouldn't be too runny. It should resemble real dough or playdough so if yours is looking a bit like "melted" ice cream, then try adding a bit more cornstarch.

Ice Cream Dough "Flavor" Ingredients
Vanilla: Imitation Vanilla, no food coloring
Chocolate: Chocolate Extract and Cocoa Powder
Strawberry: A bit of red food coloring and Imitation Strawberry

of course, the sky is the limit when it comes to flavoring!
We will try this next with the Frosting Creation Powders that we colored and scented our rice with.
AND a reader suggested that the scented rice would make excelled pretend sprinkles! Totally!
 See our colored rice HERE.

I wanted to test the fun factor out so I got out our silicone ice cream cone baking cups and some craft supplies for the ice cream toppings so L could play Ice Cream Shop.

These Ice Cream Cones are actually made of silicone which can be put in the oven to bake "ice cream cone cupcakes." They are so cool! As you can see, we also use them for play!
If your interested in purchasing, see the link below!

which he LOVED!
We've done this with play dough before but the realness factor of this stuff was a HUGE hit!
He was constantly smelling it and yes...he did ask if he could eat it lol.

Of course then I had to have some fun with it myself.
I added real sprinkles and just WISHED I had someone I could play trick on!

It's crazy how yummy this looks, right?!

***Note***
As far as I can tell it does dry out quicker than regular playdough, so if you'd like to save it, I reccommend putting it away in a sealed container or plastic baggie as soon as your done playing with it. We didn't actually save ours this time since it was VERY played with and all smashed together and left out too long which caused it to dry out quite a bit so at this point I can't say exactly how long this will save for. I'll update when I know! If you make this stuff and save it, i'd love to hear details!

  6. this is so weird, I have a post about pretend play with ice cream playdough scheduled for tomorrow. (I'd postpone it but with the holidays I have nothing to replace it with). Obviously the depth of winter is the right time to be doing icecream play ; )
I love your dough recipe, I'm never brave enough to try new ones, stick with old faithful every time. I'll link to your post incase people are braver than me.

  9. We gave this a go today and it was FABULOUS! We added some straws for "birthday candles" and as we didn't have any ice cream cones we used silicon cup cake moulds and egg cups. Glitter pieces for sprinkles, and ice-cream scoop and even put some of the dough in a snap-lock bag, cut the corner off and we had our won piping bag for icing. Sooo much fun and the kitchen smelt lovely as the play happened. Thank you!

  14. Cute idea. Would be a little scared that the kids might actually eat it. Everything goes in those little mouths!

  15. This is such a great idea. Does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement for the Duncan Hines frostings? I live in the uk and they aren't available here but look so exciting and there are just so many possibilities with them

  16. I can't wait to try this! It looks like so much fun. I had to order a set of the silicone cones. My boys, especially my three year old, will get hours and hours of play out of them.

  17. Did anyone have issues with it being eaten? There are a host of nasty chemical in the conditioner.

  18. Thank you for the concern, but no, my son did not try to eat it. He's almost 5 and luckily I don't really have to worry about things like that anymore with him, but I suppose a younger child may try to eat it, as they sometimes do with other playdoughs. If you are concerned however, you could always try a homemade playdough or edible recipe and save this for a later time when you think the danger of eating it has past.

  20. What a fantastic creation! I will be making some of this as part of a costume for my daughter's Italian Day at school, she's going to be a gelati girl. A perfect prop! Thank you and have a wonderful day.

  21. Did this as an activity at my preschooler's birthday party, it was a HUGE hit. I added a can of berry-scented shaving cream for them to spray as pretend whipped cream (has to be cream, not gel obviously). We put everything in a water table outside to keep the mess contained. I do think some younger kids might try to eat it if unattended, so I put up a sign hoping it would remind parents to explain that it is just pretend and not for eating. Thank you for the terrific idea, I'd never seen any play dough recipes so similar to ice cream before, and it was really easy.

  22. This is a great recipe. I dread making playdough because it takes so much mess & muscle to make it, but this took just a minute and is so fun! I am going to have my students make it themselves during summer camp! Thanks so much for being so creative! (I'm not worried about them eating it- one bite and it would come right back out! ☺)♥♥
